Hexagon Purus delivers hydrogen tanks to Sea Change
Hexagon Purus, a leading global supplier of zero emission mobility technology and equipment, has delivered hydrogen tanks to Sea Change, the first passenger vessel on hydrogen fuel cells.
Sea Change was set ashore mid-August and is a hydrogen-powered catamaran. The catamaran is 21 meters long and will be able to transport 75 people. Sea Change will have a range of 300 nautical miles, with a top speed of 20 knots and cruising speed on 16 knots.
The hydrogen tanks can store a total of 246 kilograms of compressed hydrogen, including a battery on 100 kWh. For Hexagon Purus it has been an opportunity to define the regulations for hydrogen tanks together with the ship classification society ABS and the US Coast Guard.
“This has been a long race for us that started in 2018 and finished when we delivered the tanks in 2020. The result is that we know have a series of hydrogen tanks that can be used and is approved by the US Coast Gard regulations”, says Håvard Stave in Hexagon Purus.
Sea Change was Hexagon Purus first delivery on hydrogen tanks for maritime use. According to Håvard Stave, there will be more hydrogen tank deliveries ahead, both for commercial vessels and vessels in the private market. Going forward, it is important for the company to collaborate with other actors to develop the regulations.
“We are involved in many vessels that is in the concept development phase, and several are ready for commercialization. This is both national and international”, Stave continues.
