Kicks off green hydrogen production in western Norway

Newly established Stord Hydrogen could produce 140 tonn green hydrogen yearly. The company will start the green hydrogen production spring 2022.

“This is a highlight for green industry development. Not only will green hydrogen be available for the market, but it will also be used by our clients in the world’s first fullscale test center for new, green energy carriers, Energy House”, says Willie Wågen, CEO in Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre.

Zero emission alternative

Greenstat, Alltec Services and Hydrogen Solutions (HYDS) together with Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre, are behind the newly established company Stord hydrogen. The venue at Stord is already under construction at Energy House’s test centre area. The production facility will be able to produce up to 400 kg of green hydrogen per day. That is enough to cover the fuel need for around 800 automobile vehicles – each day.

“The hydrogen market, in Norway and international, will grow fast the next couple of years. The fact that we are now starting hydrogen production on the Western Coast of Norway and make hydrogen available is incredibly important to speed up the green shift. Hydrogen can be used as a material input in industries, and as a zero emission fuel for cars, buses, trucks, trains or boats”, says Vegard Frihammer, founder and CEO in Greenstat.

Module based production facility

HYDS will deliver the flexible, module based production facility which will produce compressed hydrogen through electrolysis at Stord. The electrolysis technology will be delivered by the danish company Green Hydrogen Systems, through their Norwegian partner, Liquiline. This will be their first delivery of this type of electrolyser in the Norwegian market.

“We are finally transitioning from words to action. This is the big kick off for us and for green commercial hydrogen production in Norway. Our goal is to achieve scalable hydrogen production in several locations. That our first facility is at a test center who works on the future of fuel in the maritime industry is positive”, says Thor Henrik Hagen, CEO in HYDS.

Circular economy in practice

The energy created in the different tests at Energy House, through Sustainable Energy Catapult Center, will be converted to hydrogen.

“We can now utilize the energy that we create during testing. Instead of losing energy, it will now be converted to hydrogen. This is a big step in the right direction for the people who work to create an advanced, technological and reliable test center – built for tomorrows solutions”, says Magnar Aaland, CEO in Alltec Services.
