Amogy has joined the cluster

We are thrilled to announce that Amogy, a pioneer of emission-free, energy-dense ammonia power solutions, has joined Ocean Hyway Cluster in the journey towards decarbonizing the maritime industry.

Amogy is a Brooklyn-based technology startup building a carbon-free energy system that uses ammonia as a renewable fuel, which will enable the decarbonization of heavy-duty transportation. With a particular focus on the maritime industry, Amogy aims to make ammonia shipping a reality. The company has been invested in by Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, AP Ventures, DCVC, Newlab, SK Innovation, and Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures.

The article will continue below.

Splitting ammonia into hydrogen

Amogy has developed a compact, high-efficiency chemical reactor to split ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen. This reactor system comes equipped with a high-activity catalyst, allowing the reaction and ammonia cracking process to take place at higher efficiency levels and lower operating than alternative designs. The hydrogen is then used to generate power through a fuel cell. This proprietary design leverages the superior physical characteristics of liquid ammonia with the performance advantages of hydrogen.

In July of 2020, Amogy successfully engineered the first-ever ammonia-powered emission-free drone flight at a 5kW scale. Then, in May of 2021, Amogy demonstrated its 100kW powerpack in a mid-sized John Deere tractor, scaling 20 times in less than a year. The Amogy team is continuing to rapidly scale their technology and will further demonstrate the system in a Class 8 truck and tugboat within the next year, aiming to commercialize over the next few years.

Significant presence in Norway

Amogy recently officially launched operations in Norway led by Christian W. Berg, former Director at Yara Clean Ammonia. With its advanced ammonia infrastructure and ardent commitment to decarbonizing global shipping, Norway provides abundant opportunity for commercialization of Amogy’s ammonia-to-power technology. Amogy has also announced strategic regional partnerships with Amon Maritime and Yara Clean Ammonia.

Christian Berg, Managing Director in Amogy Norway.

“Becoming a member of the Ocean Hyway Cluster allows Amogy to build relationships with other members across the hydrogen value chain. The ability to share knowledge, ideas, and insights is integral for Amogy as we near commercialization. We are thrilled to be on this decarbonization journey alongside Ocean Hyway Cluster and its members,” said Berg.
