BeHydro launch world's first 1MW hydrogen dual-fuel engine
The first hydrogen-powered dual-fuel engine with a capacity of 1 megawatt was launched on 17th September by BeHydro, a joint venture between Belgian-based ABC and CMB. The scope of the dual-fuel engine is to burn a mix of up to 85% hydrogen and the rest Marine Gas Oil using a combustion engine.
The use of hydrogen in combustion engines can be a shortcut to reduced emissions. The maritime industry has a long history with the use of combustion engines, where they are seen as “the heart” of a ship. Combustion engines are well established and understood, giving this innovation an important position in the maritime energy transition towards reduced and zero emission propulsion systems.
Ocean Hyway Cluster (OHC) sees BeHydro’s project as an exciting and important contribution to reduced emissions in the maritime sector.

“We are glad to announce that shipping line CMB will have a keynote presentation at The 5th International Conference on Maritime Hydrogen and Marine Energy 14-15 October this year”, says Trond Strømgren, Senior Advisor Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Value Chain at OHC and responsible for the conference program.
Trevor Jasper, Engineering Manager - Low Carbon Technologies at CMB, will present about the HydroTug which has 2 x 2 MW dual-fuel engines for propulsion. The vessel will be the very first hydrogen tugboat in the world.
