NTRANS Opening Conference and Workshop - 24th -25th October – Trondheim
NTRANS (Norwegian Centre for Energy Transition Strategies) officially launched last week when the opening conference was held in Trondheim on the 24th and 25th October.
NTRANS will research the role of the energy system in the transition to the zero-emission society. Through NTRANS, the researchers will build a knowledge base for the road to and the consequences of deep and rapid energy conversion for different groups in society. An important part of this is to find out how the restructuring can be done fairly and democratically, while at the same time providing business opportunities for innovation and value creation from Norwegian resources.
“We will do this in an interaction between social science and technology and in an interaction between research, education, business and management” says Centre Director and Professor at NTNU, Asgeir Tomasgard.
OHC’s role in NTRANS is a link and coordinator between industrial and academic project partners in the Vestland maritime pilot.
Thursday’s opening conference included presentations from research partners and industry parterns about the four key research areas NTRANS will address:
4 Research Areas
RA1: Deep decarbonisation and wide societal change
RA2: How can we accelerate the transition to low-carbon societies?
RA3: Digitalisation and the future energy market
RA4: Development of feasible and robust transition pathways for a sustainable future
On Friday, the 6 user-cases (UC) were introduced, and discussions focussed upon potential pilot projects and “research sprints”
6 user-cases (UC) across Norway
UC1: Building the future society
UC2: Green industry and renewable power development – an integrated view on energy export and local value creation
UC3: Radical transition in the transport sector
UC4: Offshore wind – accelerated implementation and Norwegian value creation
UC5: The role of CCS – effects on welfare and the transition of society
UC6: The role of hydrogen in the transition
During the UC3 session, Hub for Ocean presented the Vestland maritime pilot and research sprint suggestions. It was clear that hydrogen will play a role in all UCs, and therefore there were suggestions that it did not need its separate UC. A similar discussion involved potentially combining UC2 & UC5 as there is significant overlap.
The next steps include defining concrete user cases and research sprints for the 4 key research areas.
