Elkem Bremanger - a producer of green hydrogen
Elkem Bremanger (located in Svelgen) produces their own hydrochloric acid via electrolysis of brine and further production via burning of hydrogen and chlorine.
Hydrogen is a by-product of the process. Today approximately 70% of the hydrogen (300kg/d) is released into the air together with steam. With cleaning and compression/liquidation, the hydrogen can lead to improved sustainability at the foundry, create innovation opportunities and value creation.
Plant Manager Arne Werge-Olsen explains why Elkem iniated the project and joined OHC below:
“Elkem Bremanger wants, in an environmentally sustainable manner, to utilise all our raw materials as well as possible. We have an excess of hydrogen that results from the Silgrain production process. Hydrogen is a green energy carrier that can contribute to reducing our carbon footprint. We hope that the energy can be utilised within the surrounding region, and thus it was natural for us to contact Ocean Hyway Cluster to help find a solution.”
The project will look into the following:
Define possible business cases
Identify possibilities for public financial support: Enova, NOx-fondet, Innovasjon Norge, Forskingsrådet, Skattefunn.
Define processing equipment and aquire price estimates from suppliers
Gas cleaning
Compression/liquidation
Storage
Distributions
Bunkering/filling station
The results will be presented in a report delivered to Elkem. The report will provide the basis to choose one of several hydrogen supply chains.
