Workshop 2: FME NTRANS - Challenges in building maritime hydrogen value chains

In the FME NTRANS User Case 3, we explore the challenges around the "chicken or egg" problem in developing maritime hydrogen value chains in Western Norway.

This event is intended for members of Ocean Hyway Cluster and partners in FME NTRANS

Background

Welcome to the second workshop within User Case 3 in FME NTRANS. This workshop will go into more detail in specific topics in our problem area (see the program below), and will feature group discussion in breakout rooms to induce interaction.

User Case 3 of FME NTRANS aims to create better understanding of the "chicken or egg problem" in establishing maritime hydrogen value chains in Vestlandet, and explore possible solutions that may be addressed by public and private actors. The user case asks: what are the key challenges in forming maritime hydrogen value chains in Vestlandet, and how these challenges may be alleviated? The workshop will be in Norwegian.

 Topics

  1. Building, scale-up and location of infrastructure (H2 production and bunkering)

    • How to establish the first hydrogen hubs, what their scale-up potential and location should ideally be, what are the practical means to support the coupling of different hydrogen markets (maritime, heavy land transport, process industry), etc.

  2. High cost of hydrogen and cost uncertainty

    • How to alleviate the high cost of hydrogen, what is the role of upscaling (economies of scale), which markets have the highest willingness to pay a premium price, what kind of policy instruments (e.g. contracts for difference) can alleviate the cost challenge, etc

  3. Creation of early demand

    • How can public procurement (high-speed ferries) and early private markets (e.g. Topeka/Wilh. Wilhelmsen, HeidelbergCement/Felleskjøpet) be supported, what is the role of early market creators (lead customers such as counties, freight owners, passengers), how can the first-mover risk be alleviated, etc.

Program

2nd Workshop, Thursday 27 May, 10.00-11.40:

Introduction to the themes and the case, identification of challenges, and discussion of solutions

  • 10.00-10.05: Tuukka Mäkitie, SINTEF Digital, Dep. Technology Management. Introduction and the purpose of the workshop

  • 10.05-10.15: Insights from the pilot until now

  • 10:15-10:20: Instructions for group discussions, break out to 3 Teams rooms with a focus on each of the topic areas above

  • 10:20-10:50: Group discussions

  • 10:50-11:00: Break

  • 11:00-11:35: Presentation of group discussions, additional comments

  • 11:35-11:40: Closing, and steps forward

The User Case 3 will result in a short note (in English) summarizing the insights and proposed solutions to the chicken and egg problem. The note will briefly summarize existing material and literature on the topic, and present insights from the workshops. The note is finished in June 2021.
