Cluster Catch-up: MHTech

“The increasing number of new technologies being advocated as the solution to our sustainability challenges is both our largest challenge and our biggest opportunity”, says Anders Martin Moe, CEO of MHTech AS.

Cluster Catch-up is OHC’s brand-new column where we ask our member companies 6 questions to catch a glimpse into their daily business-life.

First out is Anders Martin Moe, CEO of MHTech ASAnders has an MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and has broad and varied experience with low- and zero-emission technologies from maritime, offshore and onshore industries. Anders has participated in numerous projects related to emission-reducing measures in onshore facilities, ships and offshore oil & gas facilities.

 1) What is MHTech’s primary focus right now?

MHTech would like to contribute to the implementation of more sustainable solutions in all industries where we feel we can make an impact. Our primary focus to achieve this is to work with our clients, industry clusters and research institutions to assist our clients in identifying and implementing the most sustainable solutions, both in an economical and environmental perspective, in their operations.

We have a strong focus on the transportation sector, both maritime and land-based transport as well as fisheries and aquaculture. Follow-us on LinkedIn to get updates on our activities.

2) What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for MHTech in the future?

I believe there are some similarities between the biggest opportunities and the biggest challenges we face going forwards. Basically, the speed of change and the increasing number of new technologies being advocated as the solution to our sustainability challenges is both our largest challenge but also our biggest opportunity. It is a challenge because it requires both time and resources to stay on top of the technology development and gaining an insight into when the different technologies can and should be used when they should be combined with other technologies or when they should not be used. It is a large opportunity for us as a service provider and analysis company because it is continually part of our primary focus and an integral part of our business idea, but it also means that we need to prioritize time and resources to ensure that we stay updated on the latest technologies. We do this through participation in industry clusters that are relevant to our operations and by initiating and participating in research and development projects.

MHTech is currently participating in the ElMar project led by SINTEF, and the just awarded ZEVS project led by TØI.

I believe the challenge with the speed of change and the amount of technology options is something that a lot of companies in various industries can relate to.

3) How can hydrogen be a part of the solution for the future?

MHTech see hydrogen as an important fuel/energy carrier in the future energy mix. The current political discussions regarding blue, green or red hydrogen is also an important aspect which may have a short-term impact on the use of hydrogen. The key is to find applications where requirements for energy density and scale is a competitive edge for hydrogen/ammonia compared to other energy carriers such as biogas and battery electric solutions. Maritime transport, as well as long-distance road transport, are both likely to be such applications.

4. What is your primary focus when it comes to sustainability?

MHTech typically evaluates the sustainability of a technology or solution in a Life Cycle perspective, both in terms of emissions, energy consumption and efficiency as well as the economic impact. This can then be related to the UN sustainability goals no. 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13.

5. Why did you decide on becoming a member of Ocean Hyway Cluster?

MHTech decided to apply for a membership in Ocean Hyway Cluster for two main reasons:

  1. MHTech saw a need to further expand our competence related to the application of hydrogen in the maritime industries,

  2. We believe we have competence related to the analysis of energy consumption, emissions and application of low- and zero-emissions technology that will add value to the cluster, the other cluster members and that can add value to the projects initiated by the cluster.

6. Which cluster member should we interview next?

We suggest interviewing Moss Maritime.
