Kick off for the Deep Purple pilot project

The Deep Purple project is now materialising. This week all partners joined virtually for a two-day kick-off, getting ready to develop and build a land-based pilot at Kongsberg, Norway.

Multiple concepts
The Deep Purple concept was initiated in June 2016 by five individuals from TechnipFMC, SINTEF, Energy Valley and Ocean Hyway Cluster/GCE Ocean Technology. Based on national funding and intensive work from all partners, the project has since developed and received increased global attention. The original concept was subsea storage of hydrogen from offshore wind. As a result of further development, Deep Purple now offers four concepts:

  1. Stable power to offshore oil and gas installations

  2. Offshore hydrogen production

  3. Safe hydrogen storage for ports

  4. Stable electricity, hydrogen, oxygen, drinking and hot water supply for remote islands

Pilot at Kongsberg
The pilot project consortium will during the next two years design, build and test a physical land-based pilot at Kongsberg, close to TechnipFMC’s Norwegian headquarter. The pilot will include an electrolyser, hydrogen storage, fuel cells and energy control system.

Strong consortium
TechipFMC and their subsidiary KANFA have teamed up with strong partners. The pilot project consortium includes Vattenfall, Repsol, Slåttland, NEL, ABB, UMOE Advanced Composites and DNV GL. In addition, the Deep Purple project collaborates with SINTEF, USN, GCE Ocean Technology, Ocean Hyway Cluster and Energy Valley.

Huge potential and impact
There are 10’s thousands of island communities around the world that can be future users of the Deep Purple concept, changing from fossil fuels to renewable energy from offshore wind. In Europe only there are 2,700 inhabited islands. Use of the Deep Purple concept on 35 of these islands can offer renewable energy to 12.5 million people, reducing the carbon footprint in these societies significantly.

Ocean Hyway Cluster is proud to be one of the founders and partners in the Deep Purple project. All the best for the pilot!
