Floating wind – great opportunities for the Norwegian supply industry

“There is an increasing global need for a greater share of renewable energy. Floating wind can contribute to a significant part of this need. Norwegian industry now has the possibility to be the global leader in this area, including offshore production and storage of hydrogen.”

The opportunities above are highlighted in a letter from our partner GCE Ocean Technology and other players recently sent to Prime Minister Erna Solberg and other ministers and committee members. The letter points out that the position as the world leading player in floating offshore wind is not yet occupied. Norwegian businesses now have the chance to grab this position. Government involvement and facilitation are crucial to success.

You can read the entire letter here. The letter is translated from Norwegian to English by GCE Ocean Technology.

Highlights of the letter:

  • Norway has a large ocean space, good wind resources and a world-leading supplier industry

  • The authorities must start the tender process for two full-scale floating offshore wind farms on the Norwegian continental shelf

  • The tender should cover the entire value chain, not just the production stage

  • Aim to granting licenses during 2020

  • Focus on several potential end users, e.g. oil platforms, new onshore or offshore industry or offshore production and storage of hydrogen / ammonia

  • Norway's advantage is knowledge: A major program for research, innovation and supplier development in floating wind should be established as soon as possible
