India – Norway: Hydrogen and Energy Transition in Maritime Industry

The Ocean Hyway Cluster’s visit to India in February this year has led to collaboration activities. On Friday 19 June we will present at a webinar for 250 Indian students and officials about hydrogen as maritime fuel and the latest developments in Norway’s maritime industry. The presentation will be given by Trond Strømgren, Senior Advisor Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Value Chain and Head R&D.

The students are all attending the Institute of Maritime Studies & Institute of Ship Building Technology (IIMS & ISBT) in Goa. They study technical and maritime topics. As India is a large maritime nation, the university wants to direct the student’s attention to the challenge of reducing emissions from shipping. – During a meeting with Mr. Strømgren in Mumbai this year we discussed the possibility of updating our students on the maritime activities going on in Norway, says Dipak Shah, Director at IMS & ISBT.  – I am very glad that this option now becomes a reality. We are eager to get the latest news on zero emission shipping, Shah ends.

Norway as Front Runner
Ocean Hyway Cluster represents leading Norwegian maritime players. The webinar is organized by Innovation Norway India. The invitation states: “As the World's Leading Maritime Technology Nation, Norway has developed most advanced technologies and solutions for environment friendly shipping. World's largest fleet of LNG fuelled vessels is in Norway. World's first fully battery-operated passenger and car ferry Ampere is operational in Norwegian fjords. As the next step in this process of energy transition, industry, academia and government agencies in Norway have come together to develop technology for using hydrogen as maritime fuel. Ocean Hyway Cluster based out of Florø is leading the efforts. To know more about developments in the world of Maritime Hydrogen, we have organised this interaction.”

Collaboration
Innovation Norway India, represented by Pankaj R. Patil, played a key role during OHC’s India tour in February and have now organized the webinar. – It is important to connect industry and university players across nations. India is a huge market for the Norwegian maritime industry. At the same time Indian students want to attend university classes in Norway. The webinar is part of this collaboration, says Helge Tryti, Head of Innovation Norway India.

Hydrogen University Class
Last autumn Western Norway University of Applied Sciences started a new class named Hydrogen Technology. Associate Professor Velaug Myrseth Oltedal has developed the class and is responsible for giving lessons and organising the teaching. At the webinar she will present about energy transition and the role of hydrogen. Else Helge Tryti, Pankaj R. Patil and Mr. Dipak Shah will contribute at the webinar.
