Orkney Hydrogen Relations
Ocean Hyway Cluster has organised study tours to Orkney the last five years. We have established strong relations with different hydrogen and marine renewable players. One of them is EMEC, which is focusing on both topics and has a lot of ongoing activity.
The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC)
EMEC is the first and only centre of its kind in the world to provide developers of both wave and tidal energy converters – technologies that generate electricity by harnessing the power of waves and tidal streams – with purpose-built, accredited open-sea testing facilities.
In addition, EMEC has an onshore hydrogen production plant in Eday where green hydrogen is generated from surplus tidal and wind energy. With a view of developing a hydrogen economy in Orkney, EMEC’s demonstration site for new hydrogen technologies is a key element of various hydrogen research projects.
Webinar on hydrogen
Friday 26 June, EMEC runs a one-hour webinar “Responsible EU Islands: Decarbonising Lifeline Services in Orkney using Hydrogen”. The webinar will give you updates on some of the hydrogen projects EMEC are involved in, particularly R&D work being done in aviation and marine hydrogen projects. The webinar is free and is a contribution to EU Sustainable Energy Week. You can register here.
Island doers
Orcadians have a history of taking action when needed. When excess renewable energy gave the opportunity to use hydrogen as energy storage, Orkney players managed to get EU funding for some large projects. These projects have involved public sector, education and business players. Good collaboration and focusing on common goals are the reason why the expression “look to Orkney” is valid when it comes to integrating use of hydrogen in a local community.
