Technology Deep Dive

What is the problem that needs solving?

Amid mounting pressure to decarbonize and meet global net-zero goals, heavy transportation and industry—responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions—face immense challenges in adopting clean energy solutions. At Amogy, we offer sustainable solutions that utilize ammonia as a carbon-free energy carrier, providing a scalable solution to reduce emissions in these hard-to-abate sectors and drive the transition to clean energy and net-zero targets.

How is the problem conventionally solved?

Hard-to-abate sectors, as the name implies, currently lack viable clean energy solutions for decarbonization. Alternatives like methanol and LNG still emit carbon, while batteries lack the energy density for large-scale applications, and hydrogen faces storage and transportation challenges. Ammonia offers a breakthrough as a carbon-free, energy-dense fuel that is a hydrogen carrier, addressing these limitations and unlocking new possibilities for sustainable energy in these sectors.

How is your technology different from the solutions today?

Our technology uses ammonia, a substance with over 100 years of industrial use, as a hydrogen carrier to generate power. While ammonia has been widely used, no ammonia-to-power technology is available on the market. Our innovation lies in our highly efficient ammonia-cracking catalyst, more powerful than any on the market, enabling higher power density. This solution is modular, scalable, and has already been demonstrated in a drone, tractor, semi-truck, and, very recently, a tugboat.

What impact will this technology have on the process/market?

Our technology provides a transformative clean energy solution for hard-to-abate sectors, enabling total decarbonization at the point of use. When combined with advancements in clean ammonia production, it offers the potential for full well-to-wheel decarbonization, paving the way for a truly sustainable energy future in these critical industries.

When can we expect it to hit the market?

Since demonstrating the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered tugboat, we are fully focused on commercializing our ammonia-powered solutions. We expect to bring our products to the market in 2026.

What hurdles have you overcome so far, and can you see coming?

When Amogy began, there was limited knowledge about using ammonia as a fuel. We’ve worked extensively to educate stakeholders on its benefits and our technology, contributing to a significant rise in awareness of ammonia’s potential. However, regulatory challenges remain.  Amogy took a major step by orchestrating the first ammonia bunkering in the U.S. to fuel our tugboat, and we look forward to collaborating with governments to enable broader adoption.
