Why now?
Several large shipping companies are looking into ammonia as fuel and they are being met by industrial actors with the ambition of producing large quantities of green and blue ammonia. We have infrastructure for industrial use of ammonia already. How can we make use of this existing infrastructure to meet the increasing environmental regulations in the shipping industry? These are some of the question that were discussed in yesterday’s webinar on Future ammonia fuel value chains.

Short summary from the webinar:
The webinar on future ammonia value chains for shipping highlighted both the technology challenges and possible solutions, and the substantial challenge in establishing a value chain for a brand new fuel solution.
Concepts and solutions for bringing ammonia as fuel to the shipping market were presented, with realistic perspectives on scalability and handling of risk and uncertainty. The necessity of having several solutions work in parallel, such as using LNG for the immediate benefits on emission reductions combined with the ability to transition into ammonia, bio-gas or synthetic gas was also discussed.
The next steps involve how to build a value chain from scratch, avoiding direct competition with the highly efficient existing fuels and infrastructure. Demonstration projects and pilots will show the way in the coming years, with hopes of having a viable value chain in place by the end of this decade.
