Ripple effects of retrofit projects in Vestland

The retrofit project aims to reduce emissions in the maritime industry by building knowledge and lowering the threshold for adopting zero-emission fuels through vessel retrofits. The project received 1,3 million NOK from Vestland Fylkeskommune.

Project Partners

The project was initiated by Ocean Hyway Cluster in May 2023. Project partners include stakeholders from the entire value chain and aim to strengthen all aspects for faster emissions reduction in the maritime sector: Greensight AS, Havyard Leivik, CCB, Fjord Base Holding, H2 Production, Greenstat Hydrogen, Helinor, Provaris, HAV Hydrogen, Ballard, Alma Clean Power, HYON, Bergen Engines, Azane, Eidesvik, Kinn & Øygarden Kommune.

Background

By retrofitting existing vessels to operate on zero-emission fuels we can reduce emissions from the maritime industry while creating value throughout the value chain. However, there are many uncertainties related to cost, fuel, and infrastructure availability making it challenging to create robust value chains and first movers. Norway and Vestland have a unique position to build these value chains with long traditions in the maritime and oil & gas industry, strong capable shipyards, suppliers, and technology developers.  By leveraging this competence and infrastructure there is a potential for creating new green jobs, products, and services for export and added value to local communities.

The project is limited to the offshore supply vessel segment. This has been identified as a segment with great potential for large-scale benefits with many offshore-related activities dominating the ports and supply bases in Vestland.

The goal of the project is to identify:

  • Market potential for retrofitting and economies of scale

  • Investment and operational costs,

  • fuel availability, export potential, and infrastructure requirements.

  • Positive ripple effects, green job creation, and value addition to the county
