The Norwegian Ship Design Company joins the cluster

The Norwegian Ship Design Company have had great success and are chosen for two of the most prestigious hydrogen vessel contracts in Norway. We are excited to welcome them as a member of Ocean Hyway Cluster.

The Norwegian Ship Design Company is a first class Ship Design, Consultancy - and Advisory company specialized in energy efficient and low or zero emission vessel solutions. Their team consists of highly qualified personnel with a long and multidisciplinary experience, and creative and solution-oriented mindset.

The Norwegian Ship Design Company has been chosen to design several prestigious ships such as the world’s first ocean-going hydrogen powered cargo ship for Egil Ulvan Rederi, more known as the Heidelberg Cement Norway and Felleskjøpet AGRI project. Recently they could also announce that a long time ago were chosen by Torghatten Nord to design the hydrogen fuelled RoPax ferries for the prominent contract for operation of the ferry routes crossing the Vestfjorden between Bodø and Lofoten Islands. These two ferries will both become the world’s first ocean-going hydrogen ferries.

Torghatten Nord won the tender for Bodø - Moskenes, where The Norwegian Ship Design Company designed the hydrogen fuelled RoPax ferries. Design: The Norwegian Ship Design Company.

Exciting road ahead

Gjermund Johannessen, CEO of The Norwegian Ship Design Company, see that Ocean Hyway Cluster has an important role to emphasize hydrogen as an energy carrier and as an important tool on the path towards a carbon-neutral society. They also see the clusters’ work on mapping, facilitating, and marketing as crucial for the necessary shift in technology.

Norwegian Ship Design wants to support the work and see that we can make use of Ocean Hyway Cluster on several areas and levels. In a macro perspective we have an expectation that OHC will give us a greater access to international projects outside our international web of contacts.

In a micro-perspective we believe that the cluster will help us with recruiting through profiling The Norwegian Ship Design Company as an attractive employer in our hunt for new employees with a great engagement for the green shift. We have received a great amount of international attention for our projects. More local there are many inspiring initiatives, but it looks like it is hard to distinguish between projects that are long term initiatives and the projects that are for real. The two Vestfjorden ferries that we currently are developing is 100% for real. They will be built, and it is even a deadline for the completion and an absolute date for start of service. We believe that Ocean Hyway Cluster could help us engage the society and increase interest for the extremely interesting technology shift we are a part of through our projects. More news are coming from our side, and going forward we want to reach more people, says Gjermund Johannessen.

The company has a clear ambition to take a leading role in ship design and engineering of energy efficient and low or zero emission vessels.

We have had a great success the last year and our primary focus right know is mainly to materialize these projects and thereafter to make sure the great interest of these projects results in even more projects. Obviously, we have put a lot of effort in making these H2 vessels scalable and flexible so we are sure they will be very interesting also for others including international projects when hydrogen infrastructure develops, Gjermund continues.
