Cluster Catch-Up: Greenstat

“I believe we will see a future where battery electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles will both be a part of the solution, batteries for short range and fuel cells for long range.”

Cluster Catch-up is OHC’s brand-new column where we ask our member companies 6 questions to catch a glimpse into their daily business life.

In the last Cluster Catch-up, Jan Kjetil Paulsen in Canima Services sent the baton over to Greenstat. This time we spoke with Tomas Fiksdal, Manager in Greenstat, to learn more about the daily life of the company.

1) What is Greenstat’s primary focus right now?

Greenstat is involved in several exciting hydrogen projects. The project portfolio includes a range that covers both, small-, medium and big scale production capacities. Our main focus now is to refine these projects into next project phases. In some projects we go from Feasibility study phase to Concept study phase, in other projects we go from Detailed study phase to Final Investment Decision phase. Greenstat is also involved in several tender competitions, either alone or together with other players in joint ventures, SPV`s or consortiums.

2) What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for Greenstat in the future?

Greenstat has through dedicated work since 2015 positioned ourselves central within the Norwegian hydrogen value chain. We have  a very good network and we have ownership in many strong and strategic companies like for instance Glomfjord Hydrogen, Meråker Hydrogen, Green H2 Norway and H2 Marine. Through these positions, we now have the opportunity – together with other big players and stakeholders – to take part in (and hopefully win) the big tender competitions that are to be announced in the near future. I would say our biggest challenge is to find new employees with the correct know-how and experience so that we can grow according to our ambitions. But I have to say that this is mostly a “luxury problem”.

3) How can hydrogen be a part of the solution for the future?

I believe that green hydrogen will play a very important role in the energy mix of the zero emission future, both as an energy carrier – mostly as a fuel – , but also as an input to the process industry. For example can hydrogen replace carbon as a redox component in the steel production to realize “green” iron or steel. I also believe that green hydrogen will play an important role in the production of sustainable fertilizers and green ammonia. Regarding vehicles, I believe we will see a future where battery electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles will both be a part of the solution, batteries for short range and fuel cells for long range.

4) What is your primary focus when it comes to sustainability?

In Greenstat we work solely with green hydrogen by using renewable energy like solar, wind or hydropower, to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. This is today the only way to produce sustainable and zero-emission hydrogen.  We never compromise by allowing for example “low emission” solutions and we believe that this philosophy gives us credibility in the industry and makes us a preferred supplier.

5) Why did you decide on becoming a member of Ocean Hyway Cluster?

Greenstat sees OHC as one of the most professional industry clusters in Norway with many relevant members. The mix of members, from small to very big companies, gives us a good basis for finding project- and business partners.

6) Which cluster member should we interview next?

For the next Cluster Catch-up I would like to hear more about Teco 2030 and their work.
