Cluster Catch-up: HYON

Cluster Catch-up is a column where we ask our members six questions to catch a glimpse into their daily business life. In the last Cluster Catch-up, we talked with Christian Bue, CEO of Varanger KraftHydrogen and how they are focusing on renewable energy sources. When asked who they would like to see next in the series, Varanger KraftHydrogen nominated HYON.

Jørn Kristian Lindtvedt is the CEO of HYON. HYON was founded in 2017 and its goal is to be the leading provider of bunkering solutions for hydrogen.

What is Hyon’s primary focus right now?

Our focus is to develop hydrogen fueling solutions towards the maritime sector. This is currently a missing link in the value chain which needs to be addressed to unlock a wide adoption of hydrogen in the maritime sector. Our first commercial scale installation will be in the Geiranger fjord in 2023 and our technology development and qualification effort are aligned to support a successful first installation. 

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for Hyon in the future? 

The number of initiatives and opportunities within hydrogen to maritime sector grow exponentially. This represents of course a huge opportunity, at the same time as it faces us with the challenge to balance engagements and available resources. We are expanding our team, nevertheless we must be firm in our selection of engagements to deliver on our commitments.

Another important area to highlight is the need for a collaborative approach to deliver value to the end users. The value chain is not fully defined, and the lack of existing standards and interface definitions makes it mandatory to work integrated to enable zero emission sailing.

 

How can hydrogen be a part of the solution for the future? 

Hydrogen is a key enabler for energy transition in many many sectors, and it is needed to deliver zero emission shipping.  Batteries will be important for short distance sailing, but with increased distance and energy requirements, hydrogen-based fuels are the answer. We see compressed hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, and ammonia as complementary fuels in maritime sector. All have pro’s and con’s and the adoption will be determined by segment requirements and availability of solutions.


What is your primary focus when it comes to sustainability? 

Our focus is to make a significant contribution to unlock the hydrogen value-chain in maritime sector. Introduction of hydrogen-based fuels is the single most important mean to cut emissions in a sector that currently emits 1,1 billion metric tons of CO2 per year.

 

Why did you decide on becoming a member of Ocean Hyway Cluster? 

The challenge we are facing is huge and the time is limited. The only way to solve it is through a broad and open collaboration. We see Ocean Hyway Cluster as an important arena for the industry to meet, discuss and collaborate on the way forward.

 

Which cluster member should we interview next?

Brødrene Aa would be my proposal 😊 Very interesting to hear their view on Zero emission sailing and their future role in that.
